This map gave me some practice in making non-linear gameplay assisted by lots of useractors, pretty complex for original Duke Nukem 3D 1.5 CONs.

The early map version had excessively complicated sectors outdoors (consisting of hundreds of walls), resulting in visual bugs and frequent crashes. The revision 1.0.1 has some sectors and walls split apart, so it became a bit more stable.

Map overview

So far as this map was my first city map, its design quality is quite mediocre. The low Duke map limits constrained me as well. There are many ugly empty rooms with zero trimwork; some other places are better designed though. The outdoor area looks empty and lacks proper shading: everything is very bright and uniform. Some things I made when the map was almost completed - the final stage and the Duke's vehicle where the map starts have more advanced look. Also, the "Good guy Fedya's pub" near the map center has some cool spritework. The locations show a little variety, they share the similar style of trimwork and few textures are repeated all over.

On the other hand, the gameplay is non-linear with several objectives like collecting objects or searching switches and keycards. Level difficulty depends on the order one passes the goals: it can be pretty easy, challenging or even nearly impossible to survive.

New Pig Cops wearing gray clothes are extremely dangerous: they are immune to the shrinker, able to regenerate their strength and have much more powerful firearms. RPG is the best weapon against them, so finding this weapon vastly simplifies the later play. Such Pig Cops can spawn from a portal plate or an alien chopper when it gets close enough. Fortunately, only three choppers and three plates occur during the level.

The final scene challenges Duke to drive an RC car, but this scene has a bug that makes possible bypassing this shit. =)

This map is designed for Duke Nukem 3D Atomic. It must work under all EDuke32 versions as well.


Crossroads 1.0.1 was released on October 29, 2005. Now it is a part of The CROSSROADS Series complilation.
